Peter: from the Boat to Cornelius

Follow Peter from his brother Andrew and Jesus' call at the lake to the house of Cornelius and the council at Jerusalem. Step through his road one person at a time.

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, “findeth first his own brother Simon” and says, “We have found the Messiah”; “He brought him unto Jesus,” who said, “thou shalt be called Cephas (which is by interpretation, Peter)” (John 1:40-42).

Standing by the lake of Gennesaret, Jesus entered Simon’s boat and taught the multitudes, then told Simon to put out into the deep; the nets were breaking, Simon Peter fell down at Jesus’ knees, and Jesus said, “from henceforth thou shalt catch men”; they “left all, and followed him” (Luke 5:1-11).

“Now Peter and John were going up into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour” (Acts 3:1).

A certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession and kept back part of the price; Peter said, “Ananias, why hath Satan filled thy heart to lie to the Holy Spirit?” and Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and gave up the ghost (Acts 5:1-5).

At Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha, “which by interpretation is called Dorcas”; she fell sick and died, and the disciples sent for Peter; he kneeled down and prayed, said “Tabitha, arise,” and presented her alive (Acts 9:36-41).

Cornelius, a centurion at Caesarea, “a devout man, and one that feared God,” was told by an angel to send men to Joppa for “one Simon, who is surnamed Peter”; while Peter spoke, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word, and he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 10:1-8, 44-48).

At the council in Jerusalem Peter said that God had made choice that by his mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel; “after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Brethren, hearken unto me” (Acts 15:7-13).
